We reported a couple of months ago about Mercedes planning a C-Class Coupe. Now, more details are emerging on this car, and they suggest that there will be hybrid and turbocharged variants.
The car is expected to make its debut late this year or early next year. It will be competing with cars like the BMW 1-Series, which is strange, since the C-Class sedan competes with the 3-Series. The turbocharged variants will use an upcoming Mercedes engine technology dubbed “MoVe”, as in Modular V6 or V8 engines. This technology is pretty much like Ford’s EcoBoost, using smaller engine sizes with more powerful turbochargers and direct injection. This is so that it will make the same amount of power as a larger engine, but with better fuel economy.
The base model will use a naturally-aspirated 3.5L V6, and then there will be a twin-turbocharged variant developing just over 300 hp. There will also be an AMG variant, with a twin-turbo 5.5L V8. This means it will be among the first Mercedes’ to use the twin-turbo 5.5L unit instead of the current 6.2L V8. This move is to help increase efficiency across the range.
As for the hybrid, it will use an electric motor hooked up to a smaller version of the naturally aspirated V6.
The AMG variants sound like it’ll be pretty good, and the others shouldn’t be too bad either, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend the hybrid. If you want efficiency and eco-friendliness, just hope for a diesel variant.
